TJ tore off, intending to give this troublemaker what he deserved, once and for all. Strange, it felt sort of exhilarating. Kind of like she was taking risk where the end result would probably hurt someone.
TJ finally found her father, relaxing in his office. 'Daddy, Daddy!" she cried, rushing in. "Seth Goddard spoke to me and said that if I help him find you he'd give me candy!"
That didn't sound right, TJ's thoughts warned her as she saw her father perk up. "Oh really? How very thoughtful of him! See, I knew that he was a good kid inside."
"No, no, you don't understand," TJ persisted, thinking long and hard over what Seth had said. The thought of threatening her came to mind but she quickly decided against it when she saw that it would be inevitable to keep the whole Byna thing out of it. "I know he was just being wrong, Mommy said that he was a bad boy!"
"I can't believe that Theresa put that thought in your head!" Davenport responded to TJ's dismay. "I told her that he was a good kid but she just couldn't let go of it."
"But Daddy, but Daddy," TJ wailed.
But Davenport paid no heed to TJ's claim. On the contrary he studied her with a critical eye and declared, "And now Theresa has put this horrible notion in your head. But TJ, you must understand, what I said today was the truth. Seth is a good kid, all we have to do is give him time. So I don't want to hear any more negative claims on his behalf, do you understand?"
TJ was very much taken aback. Her visit to her father had solved nothing at all, which was surprising. Usually when talking to her father TJ could make herself very understood. "Yes Daddy."
"Good," Davenport said, relieved at having his daughter understand the concept of bad habits not making bad people. "Now I'd better find Seth. You said he was looking for me, right?"
Head down TJ nodded. Davenport hurried out of the room, not even showing gratitude for TJ's help.
So TJ just laid her head down on his desk in misery, certain that she would never be understood again.
